Beetles and caterpillars cause 15–50% crop damage. Identification is key to selecting effective control methods.
Major Crop Pests
| Pest | Crop | Damage | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabbage white butterfly | Brassicas | 20–40% leaf loss | Dill flowers attract parasitoids; Bt spray |
| Squash vine borer | Squash/pumpkin | Plant wilting/death | Hand removal; Bt injection into stems |
| Tomato hornworm | Tomato | Defoliation | Hand-pick; Bt spray |
| Japanese beetle | Beans, grapes | Leaf skeletonization | Neem oil; predatory wasp parasitoid |
| Flea beetle | Brassicas, eggplant | Seedling damage | Kaolin spray; insecticidal soap |
Organic Controls
| Method | Cost | Efficacy |
|---|---|---|
| Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) | 300–600 PKR/L | 80–90% (caterpillars only) |
| Spinosad (botanical) | 200–400 PKR | 75–85% |
| Neem oil | 100–300 PKR | 60–75% |
| Hand-picking | Labor only | 70–80% (if diligent) |
| Parasitoid wasps (biocontrol) | 500–1,500 PKR | 75–90% (slow; preventive) |
| Kaolin clay spray | 200–400 PKR | 60–70% (repellent) |
Bt Application Tips
Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) works ONLY on caterpillars. Does not affect:
- Adult beetles
- Aphids/whiteflies
- Spiders/insects
Best practices:
- Spray on upper and lower leaf surfaces (larvae feed on leaves)
- Reapply after rain
- Spray in early morning (UV sunlight breaks down Bt)
- Use 7–10 day intervals
Prevention
- Companion planting: Dill, cilantro, borage attract parasitoid wasps
- Trap cropping: Nasturtium attracts beetles away from main crop
- Sanitation: Remove crop debris (overwintering habitat)
- Resistant varieties: Some cabbage cultivars show resistance to cabbage moths
- Crop rotation: 2–3 year gaps reduce pest carryover
Monitoring
Check plants weekly for:
- Egg clusters (underside leaves)
- Early caterpillar damage (small holes)
- Adult beetle presence (visual inspection)
Action threshold: >1 egg per 5 plants; >5% leaf damage → begin spraying
Cost-Benefit (1-Hectare Brassica)
Untreated: 30–40% yield loss = 9–12 t at 30–40 PKR/kg = 270–480k PKR Prevention (Bt + companion planting): 5–8k PKR ROI: 3,375–9,600%
