Where Millet grows in Bangladesh

1. Old Himalayan, Piedmont Plain

The region is located in north western peak of the country adjacent to India and comprises three districts. It contains deep, rapidely permeable, sandy loams and sandy clay loams predominate. It has complex relief patterns comprising broad and narrow floodplain ridges and linear dipressions. Mean annual rainfall increases from south to north as 1600 mm to more than 2500 mm. Of total area (398154 ha) 58% high, 34% medium high, 1% medium low land and remaining 7% homestead & water bodies.

10. Active Ganges Floodplain

This region occupies unstable alluvial land within and adjoining the Ganges river. It extends to Meghna river channels from the Indian border in Chapai Nawabganj and Rajshahi districts untill the mouth of the Meghna estuary in Laxmipur and Barisal districts. Complex mixture of calcareous sandy, silty and clay alluvium. Mean annual rainfall increases from less than 1500 mm in the extreme north-west to more than 2000 mm in the south east. Of total area (333447 ha) 12% high, 33% medium high, 18% medium low, 4% low land and remaining 33% homestead & water bodies.

11. High Ganges River Floodplain

The region includes the western parts of the Ganges river floodplain which is predominantly highland and medium highland. Lower parts of basins are shallowly flooded in rainy season and some deep basins centres are moderately to deeply flooded. Olive brown, silt & clay loams on the upper floodplain and dark grey, mottled brown, clay soils on lower floodplains. The region occupies most of the country's `dry zone' where annual railfall is lowest and variable and temperature generally found highest. Mean annual rainfall increases eastward and southward across the region, from <1400 mm in west, >1600 mm in east and >1800 mm in extreme south. Of total area (1320549 ha) 43% high, 32% medium high, 12% medium low, 2% low land and remaining 11% homestead & water bodies.

12. Low Ganges River Floodplain

It compries the eastern half of the Ganges river floodplain which is lower lying than the western half of the river. The region is extended from the central to the southern parts of the country along side the Ganges river.Olive-brown silt & clay loams on top of floodplain ridges and dark grey silty clay loam to heavy clays on the lower sites. It has inter-ridge dipression and cut-off channels. Mean annual rainfall increases from about 1600 mm in the nort west to about 2000 mm in the south east. Of total area (796851 ha) 13% high, 29% medium high, 31% medium low, 14% low land and remaining 11% homestead & water bodies.

2. Active Tista Floodplain

Occupies 5 districts in north western parts includes the active floodplains of Tista, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers. It has complex patterns of low, generally smooth, ridges, inter-ridge dipression and river channels and cut-off channels. Irregular pattern of grey, stratified, sands and silts predominate. Mean annual rainfall increases from about 2400 mm in th south east to more than 2800 mm in the north west. Of total area (83644 ha) 2% high, 72% medium high land and remaining 26% homestead & water bodies.

3. Tista Meander Floodplain

The region occupies major parts of the Tista floodplains, floodplains of Atri, little Jamuna, Karatua, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers. It icludes parts of7 districts in the north western parts of the country. Olive brown, rapidely permeable, loamy soils on the upper and grey or dark grey, slowly permeable heavy silt or clay loam on lower land. Most areas have broad floodplain ridges and almost level basins. Mean annual rainfall increases from about 1500 mm in the south west to about 2300 mm in the extreme north. Of total area (946803 ha) 35% high, 51% medium high, 4% medium low land and remaining 7% homestead & water bodies.

4. Karatoya-Bangali Floodplain

It located in north-central part of the country and west of Jamuna river.Grey silt loam and silty clay loams predominate on the ridges. Areas are broad floodplain ridges and almost level basins. Alluvium deposited by Koratua-Bengali deposits. Mean annual rainfall increases from about 1500 mm in the south west to about 1800 mm in the north-east. Of total area (257158 ha) 23% high, 44% medium high, 14% medium low, 1% low land and remaining 14% homestead & water bodies.
