The Sierra region is dominated by the Andes Mountains with altitudes from 1,0000 m.a.s.l. in the western part to more than 6,000 m.a.s.l. It is made up of rows of mountains, snow-capped mountains, volcanoes, high Andean páramos, peaks, valleys and lagoons. This region receives the alternating influence of oceanic and Amazonian air masses and the oscillation of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which is why it registers two rainy seasons (bimodal distribution of rainfall), between March-April and October-November. In general, the annual average rainfall varies between 800 and 1500 mm. The highest temperatures are recorded between December and January, with minimums between April and June. The temperature is linked to the height; Between 1,500 and 3,000 m the average values ​​vary between 8 and 20ºC, with a temperature gradient of ~5ºC for every 1,000 m of altitude. The soils of the Sierra Region are sandier, less evolved, have greater mineral reserves but are more acidic than those of the Coast, due to the fact that they have a greater amount of accumulated organic matter.
